Jobs You Can Still Do After Retirement
We’ve all dreamt of retirement when we were young, to finally have all of the hours in the day for ourselves to do whatever it is that we want to do.
But at some point, that can get boring, especially if you’ve spent the last 30 years of your life working. And at work, you’re always moving, having conversations, and you have something to look forward to at the end of it all.
Meanwhile, when you’re retired, days can feel longer, and it can get pretty stagnant and lonely. So, you find ways to keep yourself busy. Once you find that your hobbies and household chores are no longer enough to fulfill your life, it’s always okay to go back to working if you’re still capable.
Many find working after retirement fun and exciting. According to a Pew Research Center survey, two-thirds of workers aged 65 and older are satisfied and happy with their jobs.
If you’re thinking about going back to work after retirement, here are some jobs to consider.
Social or community-driven jobs
One of the reasons why you are looking to go back to the workforce as a retired individual might be because you are craving social interactions.
A 2024 national study published by JAMA found that more than one-third of people aged 50 to 80 feel lonely, and nearly as many feel isolated. The same study highlights the health risks associated with loneliness and isolation.
Consider getting these jobs if you want to feel less lonely during retirement:
- Business owner
- Tour Guide
- Retail Salesperson
- Maintenance worker
- School bus driver
- Office secretary
- Nanny or child care worker
- Receptionist
A lot of these jobs are community-based. It means initiating conversations with other people or simply allowing yourself to be surrounded by coworkers.
There is nothing wrong with going back to work if you’re feeling lonely. You must maintain or create new relationships even after retirement, because life doesn’t suddenly stop when you’re no longer on the payroll.
Jobs driven by a sense of passion
Some retirees want to go back to work because of unfinished business. They feel they’re not done yet and long for a sense of passion and fulfillment.
However, once they’re retired and have moved on, so have their previous employers. Luckily, there are jobs that you can explore that will help you find that sense of fulfillment.
- Teacher
- Consultant
- Counselor or life coach
- Clergy
- Financial planner or advisor
These jobs are a way for you to impart your years of work experience to others. By doing so, you find that purpose you’re longing for while enjoying your retirement.
Retirement is not the end of the line
There’s so much more life to live after retirement.
Some retirees find enjoyment in staying home and continuing to live their life, doing things they’ve held off for so long because work gets in the way. However, some find fulfillment in returning to work or in continuing their legacy.
There’s nothing wrong with both. As long as you’re doing what makes you happy and you’re enjoying your retirement.
